Marine and Fisheries Sector Included on ATBC Agenda


For the first time marine and fisheries sector included in 2010 Association for Tropical Biology and conservation (ATBC) that held at Bali July 19th – 23rd 2010. The Chairman of Steering Committee, Dr. Adi Basukiriadi from Indonesia University stated that the Minister of Marine affairs and Fisheries gave whole support so the ATBC meeting break an record on history, because participate by 900 scientist from more than 60 countries. The ATBC opened by The vice President of Republic of Indonesia, H.E Prof. Dr. Budiono. Prof. Frans Bongers, the President of ATBC, in his speech stated that his happiness and appreciation that marine and fisheries sector included on agenda for the first time.
According to the Minster executive staff of Marine affairs and Fisheries, Dr. Suseno Sukoyono  that very important introduces the biodiversity of Indonesian marine to the international and Indonesia marine and fisheries policy that put conservation in one of main pillar on pro sustainability development. In this meeting discussed about coastal and marine biodiversities, climate change and carbonize forest, health and conservation, traditional knowledge system, Papua and New Guinea ecosystems,  Wallacea biogeography, orang utan, ornithology, entomology, and etc.
Dr. Suseno Sukoyono stated that in ATBC 2010 agenda there are 8 marine and fisheries symposium by publicize 64 national and international speakers. The Agency for Marine and Fisheries Research o f MMAF explain their research in biotechnology sector.  the speaker from US Mr. Crispen Wilson explain that Indonesia has long history about traditional fisheries management that exploit in order preparation of planning in Indonesia fisheries management.

About ATBC

ATBC (Association for Tropical Biology and conservation) is a largest profession organization in the world in Tropical biology and conservation. ATBC established on 1963, with a mission are research empowerment and facilitate the idea exchange in biology and tropical environment. ATBC 2010 theme is  Tropical Biodiversity:  Facing food and energy crisis,and climate change and carbonize forest, health and conservation, traditional knowledge system, Papua and New Guinea ecosystems,  Wallacea biogeography, orang utan, ornithology, entomology, and etc.

ATBC 2010 arranged  and directed to give real impact toward conservation and sustainability development, including related human resources capacity, so the aim of ATBC can direct to cover as follow:

  1. Facilitate an opportunity to scientist or biology practitioner and conservation to interact with international scientist, gain many knowledge, and develop synergize and equivalent network.
  2. Facilitate as many as possible for college and researcher to presented their work and build a confidence and crucial network for their study development and research in the future.
  3. In international scope, create sustainability network for Indonesia, especially supporting scientist participation from outside Java, including Eastern Indonesia
  4. Gather togetherness of scientist and biology and conservation practitioner who works iin Asia Pacific (includes Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, The Philippines, Papua New Guenia, Australia, and Timor Leste) forwarded to multilateral partnership.
  5. Introduce to international community about science work of Indonesian scientist to encourage improvement on international partnership
  6. ntroduce to international community about most beautiful biodiversity in land and in water.
Human resources capacity development is a one of important aspect at ATBC 2010. ATBC will held workshop training, accompanied by the expertise and scholarship provision for college, scientist, and researcher to gain the benefit of science and practice knowledge, related on nature resources management that in the end will strengthen nature and economy security. Especially on sustainability development and policy concept bases on knowledge.
ATBC also facilitate many policy declarations that more take on tropical countries side. ATBC also open an opportunity to the scientist to have diplomacy via knowledge, in particular reposition in order international pay attention on perception and need of tropical countries.
