Undangan International Seminar 2009
From Ocean for Food Security, Energy and Sustainable Resources and Environment
Three important global issues recently emenged the surface. Those are food security, energy and resources and environmental sustainability.
Food security does not just concern food productio. It is defined more appropriately as the physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food to meet dietary needs. Fish represents the main source of animal protein to about one billion people in the world. Fisheries are an important part of food security, particularly for many poor people in developing countries. In low income food countries (LIFDCs), they make up 22% of animal protein consumption overall. In coastal areas and around major rive systems the dependence on fish is usually getting higher.
Ocean potentially plays a vital role in provid food supply and high quality protein. Worldwide, the demand fish-based food source has more than doubled over thirty years, due particularly to the increase in the world's population. Increase in income and urbanization in many developing countries and health concerns aboiout sources of animal products are expected to fulfill the global demand for fish in the near future.
Recently, however, further attempt to increase fish production has been challenged by several issues: climate change, soaring fuel price, degrading environment and sustainability. The campaign over the us of biofuels to carbon emissions and to cut dependence from fossil fuels has crucial implications for food security as well as for current and future marine resources use. Meanwhile, climate change combined with the rising demand for marine origin biofuels reduce the opportunity to exploit land, water and biodiversity for food production and affect food prices. Synergies and trade-offs must be examined with a view to ensure both security and environmental protection. Sustainable fisheries program as well as renewable energy resource must, therefore, be formulated.

Topics that will be discussed in this seminar are :
- Food Security : covering sub topics of Food Production Tecnology (aquaculture, resource mapping, stock assesment, stock enhancement, fishing technology, resource dynamics, economic valution, and resource optimation), Product Value Improvement (handling and processing, food safety, biotecnology and process engineering, supply and value chains), and Food Policy (fish-based food supply policy, fish-based food distribution policy, food vulnerability and povety alleviation);
- Resourc e and Environment : covering sub topics of Resource and Enviroment Biophysics (germ-plasms, resources dynamics, environment, biotechnology of resources utilization, monitoring technology and observation of resources and environment),Sosial Economics (social ecological system, social resilience, governance), Policy on Resources and Environmental Preservation, and Policy on Crisis and Disasters Mitigation;
- Energy: covering sub topics of Alternative Energy (technical engineering of alternative energy, biotechnology engineering for alternative energy, comparison of techno-socio-economic of various alternative energy sources) and Energy Policy (marine based energy development, alternative energy for marine and fisheries activities).
